The Failed to load resource: 500 plus Unexpected token '<' combo on /diff_entries means the server returned an HTML error page where the browser expected JSON. That endpoint is what progressively loads the file diffs on a PR page, so when it 500s, the Changes view renders empty because the JSON never arrives.

Common causes:

1. One file in the batch the diff renderer chokes on (binary, oversized, a submodule that no longer resolves, a broken symlink). One bad entry usually takes the whole batch down. Load files one at a time from the Files changed tab by expanding collapsed diffs individually, the failing entry becomes obvious pretty quickly.

2. Diff size. Add ?w=1 to the URL to ignore whitespace-only changes, that often shrinks the payload enough for the remaining entries to come through.

3. Stuck cache on that specific PR. Force-pushing a trivial commit to the PR head (or rebasing) invalidates the diff cache, and the UI usually re-renders cleanly after.

Practical workaround for actually reading the diff in the meantime: pull it as a patch instead of going through the web UI.

From the CLI:

Or in the browser, append .patch (or .diff) to the PR URL:

That pulls the full change set without touching diff-entries.

If it still 500s via CLI or .diff, it's a server-side issue tied to that specific PR rather than your browser, and the range= hash in your console trace is worth including in a support ticket, it identifies exactly which batch is failing.
